5 ways to bring nature into your home

Updated: Jul 25, 2023

Incorporating natural elements into home design is one of my favorite things to do as an interior designer. We Minnesotans can be cooped up indoors for up to six months of the year due to our ridiculously long winters(!!), so bringing a little bit of the outdoors inside is an absolute necessity. Nature has a way of soothing our souls and helping us stay connected to the beauty that’s all around us – no matter where you live or what the season.

In this post, I’ve outlined five strategies we use at salt + spruce interiors to seamlessly bring nature into our clients’ homes. From incorporating natural materials to embracing organic colors and textures, I hope these tips will help you create a serene and harmonious environment that celebrates the beauty of the outdoors!

Biophilic design: Incorporating nature’s elements

One of the most powerful ways we bring nature into our clients’ homes? Through the concept of biophilic design. This approach focuses on integrating natural elements, such as sunlight, plants, water features and natural materials into interior spaces. We strategically position large windows to maximize natural light, creating a seamless connection between indoor and outdoor environments.

We also incorporate potted plants to infuse spaces with fresh air and greenery. Natural materials like wood, stone and bamboo are used for flooring, furniture and accents, adding warmth and authenticity to the design.

Organic colors and textures

Understanding the power of color and texture is key to evoking a natural ambiance. We often use earthy tones like greens, browns, and blues to create a sense of serenity and connection to the outdoors. Soft, natural textures like linen, jute, and woolen fabrics add depth and tactile interest.

To enhance the organic feel, we love to incorporate nature-inspired patterns, such as floral or leaf motifs, in wallpapers, fabrics and upholstery. By carefully selecting colors and textures, we can create a visually cohesive space that echoes the beauty and tranquility of the natural world.

Natural and sustainable materials

Another way we bring nature into our clients’ homes is through the use of natural and sustainable materials. From reclaimed wood to recycled glass, we prioritize eco-friendly choices that minimize the environmental impact.

We may suggest incorporating furniture made from sustainable materials like bamboo or cork. We also opt for natural stone countertops or reclaimed wood flooring. By choosing materials with a connection to nature, we create an eco-conscious space that's in harmony with the environment.

Statement plants

Statement plants, like fiddle-leaf figs, monstera or snake plants, act as focal points, adding height and drama to a room. We love to position these green beauties in well-lit areas or on decorative plant stands, ensuring they become captivating features in their own right.

Nature-inspired artwork and décor

Artwork and decor inspired by nature serve as the finishing touches in our arsenal. They add the perfect dose of nature’s beauty to complete the overall design. Nature-inspired paintings, photographs or prints depicting landscapes, flora and fauna connect the interior to the outside world.

We love to incorporate natural decor elements like seagrass, warm woods and foraged branches of all types. Organic-shaped ceramics, handcrafted sculptures or stone vases add a layer of authenticity and craftsmanship. By carefully curating nature-inspired artwork and decor, we can infuse our clients’ homes with a sense of groundedness, warmth, and appreciation for the natural world.

There’s nothing we love more than blending the beauty of nature into our clients’ homes. By incorporating biophilic design principles, organic colors and textures and natural materials, we create spaces that exude serenity, connection and harmony.
