Finding flow with faux.

Remember when faux plants and flowers were positively tacky and taboo? Something you had only seen at your great aunt’s house, complementing her curio cabinets, linoleum floors and vertical blinds? Well, thanks to incredible advances in artistry, materials and manufacturing, these little nuggets of faux love are helping black thumbs like me experience the joy of indoor greenery year-round – without the burden of having to keep yet another damn thing in this house alive.

I am LOVING this trend – and I do not see it going anywhere soon. It’s mindblowing how real so many of these plants look. And the vibrant color, dimension and sculptural interest they bring to tables, shelves, countertops and corners (hello, gorgeous 5-foot-tall faux olive tree) is fresh and life-giving.

How to do it right:

  1. Don’t overdo it. It’s lo-so-easy to get carried away with these manufactured marvels. RESIST. Just like all things in life, everything in moderation.

  2. Contain, contain, contain! I’m seeing more and more faux plants come in containers that are artful and interesting. But lots of them still come in very basic, boring pots. Grab a basket, a wooden crate, a galvanized bucket or any other container you love to instantly boost the design quality and add more interest.

  3. Don’t forget to dust. It was often difficult to know what color Great Aunt Bernice’s faux plants once were, but for the decades worth of dust they had collected. Don’t be like Bernice. Take a minute every now and again to dust your fauxs. Here are some great tips on how to do it.

  4. Mix in a few OGs. Just to keep ‘em guessing, sprinkle in a few low-muss, easy-care live plants, fresh-cut flowers or backyard branches.
